Icons hold a significance place in all aspects of the life of the Orthodox Church. Icons are used in liturgical service, prayer, Christian education and more. Iconography is a sacred art where theology is dressed in colors. They are called “windows to heaven”, “open scriptures” and “theology in color”. When painting an icon, iconographers follow particular strict steps from beginning to end. All materials used in painting an icon have certain specifications. Colors are to be mixed in a special method using earthly ingredients (no chemicals). Colors are to be used in a precise manner also.
Colors are not used merely to beautify icons, but rather to portray theological ideas. The following presentation was created to explain the meaning of colors in Orthodox icons. A very informative presentation that contains considerable amount of colorful icons, which makes it easy and interesting to understand the theological materials of the presentation.
